The Purple Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea venosa) is a captivating carnivorous species offered by Agroworld, prized for its unusual appearance and ability to thrive in tropical conditions. With its trumpet-shaped, upright pitchers marked in deep maroon with touches of green along the edges, it’s a true showpiece for collectors and garden enthusiasts.

This perennial forms clumps of rosettes, producing multiple pitchers that typically reach 6–8 inches in height. Over time, it develops into an impressive cluster that can become the focal point of any plant collection. Once established, it may also send up dark purple, slightly fragrant flowers that rise above the pitchers — a striking contrast to its bold foliage.

  • Light

    • Grows well in partial to full sun. Strong sunlight enhances its deep maroon and green coloration.

    • Best growth and pitcher development occur with at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

    Water

    • Keep soil consistently wet, never allowing it to dry out.

    • Use only rainwater, distilled, or filtered water. Tap water in Trinidad contains minerals that can harm the plant.

    • Place the pot in a shallow tray filled with water for watering purposes only — this keeps soil evenly moist and mimics natural bog conditions.

    Soil

    • Requires acidic, nutrient-poor soil. Best mix: sphagnum peat moss with perlite or silica sand (1:1).

    • Do not use regular potting soil, compost, or fertilizers.

    Feeding

    • Naturally catches insects in its pitchers; no additional feeding is needed.

    • Avoid feeding meat or human food, which will harm the plant.

    Temperature & Climate

    • Very hardy and adapts well to Trinidad’s warm climate.

    • Will grow outdoors year-round if moisture and sunlight are consistent.

    Growth

    • Compact, clumping growth habit with rosettes of upright pitchers.

    • Pitchers grow 6–8 inches tall, with deep maroon tones edged in green.

    • Can produce dark purple, slightly fragrant flowers once a year, which rise above the foliage and add ornamental value. Timing varies in the tropics.
