Sarracenia ‘Bug Bat’ is a striking carnivorous plant prized for its tall, hooded pitchers and dramatic coloration. Its pitchers feature a vivid mix of green with bold red veins and flecks of white, topped by a deep purple-red hood. Mature plants can produce pitchers up to 16 inches tall and spread up to 2 feet wide, making it a showpiece in any carnivorous plant collection.
Like all Sarracenia, ‘Bug Bat’ lures insects into its tubular traps where they are digested, providing the plant with essential nutrients. It thrives in acidic, nutrient-poor soil (such as peat moss mixed with perlite or sand) and requires plenty of moisture to mimic its natural bog habitat.
Sarracenia hybrid 'Bug Bat'
Light
-
Thrives in full sun for at least 6 hours daily. Can tolerate partial shade, but strong light produces the best pitcher color and growth.
Water
-
Keep soil consistently wet, never allowing it to dry out.
-
Use rainwater, distilled, or filtered water. Avoid tap water, which contains minerals that can harm the plant.
-
Standing the pot in a shallow tray of water is ideal to mimic bog-like conditions.
Soil
-
Requires acidic, nutrient-poor soil. Best mix: sphagnum peat moss with perlite or silica sand (1:1 ratio).
-
Never use regular potting soil, compost, or fertilizer, as they will damage the plant.
Feeding
-
Catches its own insects naturally; no feeding is necessary.
-
Do not give human food or fertilizer. The pitchers digest bugs that fall inside.
Temperature & Climate
-
Adapts well to Trinidad’s warm climate and can tolerate cooler nights.
-
Outdoors year-round is suitable, as long as moisture is consistent and sunlight is strong.
Growth
-
Mature plants produce pitchers up to 16 inches tall and can spread up to 2 feet wide.
-
Pitchers die back naturally over time; trim dead foliage to encourage new growth.
