Alocasia macrorrhiza ‘Variegata’, also known locally as Variegated Elephant Ear, is a bold tropical aroid that thrives in our Caribbean climate. It is prized for its huge, arrow-shaped leaves splashed with marbled white and green patterns. Each leaf is unique, sometimes showing half-moon variegation or creamy streaks that stand out beautifully against the lush greenery of our gardens.

In Trinidad and Tobago’s warm, humid environment, this plant can grow very large outdoors (6–10 ft tall with leaves 2–3 ft wide). Indoors, it remains more contained but still commands attention as a statement plant.

  • Light

    • Best grown in bright, indirect light if indoors.

    • Outdoors, it loves dappled shade or morning sun under taller trees. Midday tropical sun can scorch the white parts of the leaves.

    Water

    • With our heat, water 2–3 times per week outdoors, or when the soil surface feels slightly dry.

    • Indoors, water less frequently but always keep soil evenly moist.

    • Avoid waterlogging, especially during the rainy season, by ensuring good drainage.

    Soil

    • Use a rich, airy mix: topsoil blended with compost, coco peat, and perlite or sharp sand for drainage.

    Fertiliser

    • Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
